Welcome back to our interview series, "5 Senses." Inspired by the 5 senses meditation method- bringing awareness to what you can see, taste, hear, smell and touch- we'll be talking to women in our Lake Jane community who inspire us.
Up next is our friend Sarah Nsikak who lives in Brooklyn, NY. Sarah is the eyes, hands, heart, and soul behind La Reunion Studio.
1. What are you reading?
I'm currently reading The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion - I've had it on my shelf for a long time and was always talked out of reading it. I just turned 33 which is a magical number to me, so I started it on my birthday without planning to at all. I've gone through a lot of hard things this past year, so I was feeling particularly up to it. I find it to be a guide through grief in a way. It's not a solution but it has been a source of comfort in moments when I've grappled with the heaviness and nuances of grief.
2. What are you eating/what food is inspiring you?
Just discovered golden kiwis and they are incredible. They come from New Zealand and are a nice butterscotch color. The taste is almost like if a kiwi were sweetened with manuka honey. It's truly dessert for me lately.
I've been really into Sade and Alice Coltrane, and that can describe the spectrum of my moods pretty well.
4. What are you touching with your hands these days?
I've been doing a lot of hand sewing. Applique, embroidery, repair, etc... I'm inventing the time for it and pulling it out of thin air because it's medicinal and transportive.
5. What are the smells of your day?
I've been burning a lot of sage, but also the incense called Winona Forever by High and Lonely (thanks Katie!) and rosemary oil keeps the mosquitoes away!
Thank you, Sarah!
